Incorporated in 1963, San Marcos is just 12 miles inland in rolling coastal hills and valleys. The community's 34 square miles serve as a haven for businesses and their families away from the congestion of major metropolitan areas. Bordered to the west by the unclouded beaches of the Pacific and on the east by the magnificent Laguna Mountains and Anza Borrego Desert, San Marcos offers a dynamic environment in the midst of fruit orchards, horse ranches and farms.

The key to San Marcos’ outstanding quality of life has been an aggressive plan to encourage high-quality development that is community sensitive. To that end, city leaders have created a world-class civic complex that includes a library, community center and city hall. The Civic Center with its numerous activity rooms for aerobics, dance and childcare, features an auditorium that is available to local organizations.

Quality education has always been an important part of the plan. San Marcos is the home of Palomar College, the largest community college in San Diego County, as well the California State University, San Marcos campus, one of the newest in the system. Students in grades K-12 are under the jurisdiction of the San Marcos Unified School District, an award-winning district that has received seven “Schools of Distinction” awards.

San Marcos residents enjoy excellent parks and plenty of recreational opportunities including master parks and an extensive trail system. Beaches, lakes, and all of the amenities of the San Diego metropolitan area are just minutes away.
